St. Peter Chrysologus, Bishop, Confessor (Traditional Calendar)
From the Headmaster, John Bertolini
Happy New Liturgical Year! As we approach the midway point of the first week of Advent, please know that you are all in my thoughts and prayers as we are called by the Church to more deeply reflect on preparing our hearts for the coming of Christ at Christmas. Have a truly blessed Advent season.
Thank you to Bob Quinn for overseeing the delivery and sorting of Christmas wreaths last Tuesday, and to the Degrange, Reyes-Mendoza, Carr, Balderas-Campos, Cuevas, and Hill families, along with Mary Quinn, Camille Silva, Franco Decicco, and Angelica Rowles who showed up to either assist.
Please pray for the success of our final appeal letter mailing of the year to the parishioners of St. Helena Catholic Church. Thank you to John Kelly and Anna Hickey for writing and editing the letter, to Bob Quinn for preparing the labels, to Mary Quinn, Cindy Carr, Christina, Carlos, and Veronica Uribe, Camille Silva, Wendy and Clare Huss, Mara Montes, Sophia Castańeda, David, Tina, and Christa Hill, Troy and Anna Hickey, and Eric Muth for stuffing envelopes, and to Tom Huss for overseeing the project.
Thank you to Santa and Mrs. Claus for helping with our Dine & Donate on Sunday, Dec. 2nd at Compadres. It was great to see the entire Haeuser, Hill, and Buyarksi families (with grandparents as well), along with Lowell Stalbaum, Joan Andrego, Allyanna Letts, Ken Dumars, and Dominic Bertolini. Also in attendance were the entire Fidler and Huss families and the Taylor family from St. Thomas Aquinas. Thank you to Rick Enos and the entire staff at Compadresfor hosting.
Changes to the 2018-2019 Calendar – Final Reminder!
Due to the loss of three instructional full days of school due to the poor air quality caused by the fires in Paradise, there are six important changes to the schedule: Friday, Dec. 7th, Wednesday, Dec. 12th, Friday, Feb. 1st, Friday, April 5th and Friday, May 3rd will now be full days of school. Holy Thursday, April 18th, will now be a half-day of school with 11:30 dismissal instead of being the first day of Easter break. This will avoid us having to add days in June to make up for lost instructional time. Thank you for your understanding.

Dec. 7 – Date Night @ St. Apollinaris – 7:00 P.M.
Date Night is this Friday and we hope you will join us for a final gathering in 2018. After changing things up in November we are back to our normal format this month, 7:00 pm in the Youth Room with wine and food, followed by the program at 7:30. Also, we will have child care available per our normal protocol.
We are also excited to announce that starting in January we will have a new study series. It is a 5-part video and discussion series by Dr. Edward Sri of the Augustine Institute on his book "Men, Women and The Mystery of Love" which is a study of JP II's "Love and Responsibility" which he wrote in the late 1950's when he was Cardinal Karol Wojtyla. We will have more information on Friday about this and we hope to see you all there.
Have a Blessed week!
Walt and Pam on behalf of the entire Date Night team
Dec 9 (SU) – Carols & Lessons @ St. Apollinaris – 7:30 P.M.
In observance of Advent, and to celebrate the beginning of the Christmas Season, the choir of Holy Family Mission in Rutherford will be presenting a service of Carols & Lessons at St. Apollinaris on the 2nd Sunday of Advent, December 9th, at 7:30pm. This is the fifth year the Choir has presented the Carols and Lessons service, and our first time at St. Apollinaris. Please come to pray and sing with us.
The service includes an opening and closing prayer, and nine short Scripture readings (the "Lessons"), from Genesis to the Gospel of John. The choir will present Christmas music from the past 600 years, a sampling of a remarkably rich tradition. And there will be familiar carols for the congregation and choir to sing together.
Carols and Lessons is an English tradition dating to King's College, Cambridge, in 1918, when it was instituted in thanksgiving for the end of the Great War. This year marks the hundredth anniversary of this tradition. It's a start on getting ready for Christmas, a way to go caroling without getting cold and wet, and we hope a welcome change from the Christmas Musak in the shopping mall.
Please continue to keep Chuck Rowles and his entire extended family in your prayers so that he will be ultimately cured of his stage-4 colon cancer, and that he can return to enjoying a full and active life with his family and friends. Please continue to pray the St. Peregrine Novena found below as well.
