Nov. 27, 2018
Tuesday of the 34th Week in Ordinary Time
Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal (Traditional Calendar)
From the Headmaster, John Bertolini
I hope you and your family were able to rest up over the long Thanksgiving weekend, because things will be busy all the way until Christmas break. Thank you again for your flexibility during the last couple of weeks as we negotiated through horrendous air quality that necessitated the closure of school for three whole days and prompted early dismissal some days. Please carefully read the changes to the yearly calendar listed below which includes makeup days for lost instructional time.
I would like to also encourage you to please pray the attached St. Andrew Novena beginning Friday, Nov. 30 – Mon. Dec 24 for the financial success of the school as this time of the year is very trying in terms of securing funds. As Jesus reminds us in the Gospel of Mark, “Amen I say to you, all things whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you shall receive, and it shall be done.” (Mark 11:24)
Changes to the 2018-2019 Calendar
Due to the loss of three instructional full days of school due to the poor air quality caused by the fires in Paradise, there are six important changes to the schedule: Friday, Dec. 7th, Wednesday, Dec. 12th, Friday, Feb. 1st, Friday, April 5th and Friday, May 3rd will now be full days of school. Holy Thursday, April 18th, will now be a half-day of school with 11:30 dismissal instead of being the first day of Easter break. This will avoid us having to add days in June to make up for lost instructional time. Thank you for your understanding.
Holy Souls Mass Intentions for November – LAST CHANCE
Since we are in the month of November in which the Church reminds us of our important role in praying for the souls of the faithful departed, we will once again be taking written names of your family and friends to include on the altar this month to be prayed for in all Masses celebrated at the school. Attached are two forms: one in English and one in Spanish for you to fill out and return to the office. Thank you for your prayers for the holy souls in Purgatory.

Upcoming Community Event
Dec 9 (SU) – Carols & Lessons @ St. Apollinaris – 7:30 P.M.
In observance of Advent, and to celebrate the beginning of the Christmas Season, the choir of Holy Family Mission in Rutherford will be presenting a service of Carols & Lessons at St. Apollinaris on the 2nd Sunday of Advent, December 9th, at 7:30pm. This is the fifth year the Choir has presented the Carols and Lessons service, and our first time at St. Apollinaris. Please come to pray and sing with us.
The service includes an opening and closing prayer, and nine short Scripture readings (the "Lessons"), from Genesis to the Gospel of John. The choir will present Christmas music from the past 600 years, a sampling of a remarkably rich tradition. And there will be familiar carols for the congregation and choir to sing together.
Carols and Lessons is an English tradition dating to King's College, Cambridge, in 1918, when it was instituted in thanksgiving for the end of the Great War. This year marks the hundredth anniversary of this tradition. It's a start on getting ready for Christmas, a way to go caroling without getting cold and wet, and we hope a welcome change from the Christmas Musak in the shopping mall.
Please continue to keep Chuck Rowles and his entire extended family in your prayers so that he will be ultimately cured of his stage-4 colon cancer, and that he can return to enjoying a full and active life with his family and friends. Please continue to pray the St. Peregrine Novena found below as well.
