Monday of the Third Week of Lent

From the Headmaster, John Bertolini

As I mentioned last Tuesday, you are receiving this memo early due to my upcoming absence from school from Monday-Wednesday afternoon at a diocesan principals retreat in Los Altos. Please direct all questions and concerns to Mr. Duncan during this time.

Today we began the third and final trimester of the school year.  This morning after Mass I reminded the students about the importance of finishing strong in their studies. As the days get longer, warmer, and busier, please help us keep your students focused.

Week in Review (Feb. 26- Mar. 3)

Second trimester exams took place last week. As I mentioned over last two weeks,

most final exams, even in the upper grades, compose less than 25 percent of the total grade. While the final exam is an important assessment of cumulative knowledge, it does not usually impact the final grade in a major way – positively or negatively. This is important to bear in mind when you receive report cards next week.

On Thursday, March. 1st, many of our high school students solicited business donations for our upcoming Jog-a-Thon. I am grateful for their efforts and very proud of their dedication to the school. Thank you, high schoolers!

On Friday, March 2nd, our faculty was blessed to be led in a Lenten retreat by Kolbe Academy alumnus, Fr. Christopher Crotty (Class of 1986). Fr. Christopher began the day with morning prayer in the Byzantine Catholic tradition, followed by a series of inspirational talks. We were very blessed to have this opportunity.

The same afternoon and evening, numerous parent, alumni, and student volunteers including Dennis Healey, Arnulfo Solorio, Ben and Nate Hickey, Robert Bakh, Sean Quinn, Mary Quinn, Phil Duncan, Celeste Solorio, Joe Quinn, Joe Thoits, Daniel Salinas, and Jeffrey Healey, spent hours ripping out the old carpet from the hall and preparing it for new carpet which was laid on Saturday morningMarch 3rd by Isidro Rodriguez, Julio Rodriguez, Dennis Maykowski, and Ricardo Cuevas.

Troy and Anna Hickey were here from Friday afternoon through Saturday evening staying very late on Friday night and coming back very early on Saturday morning. They were involved with every aspect of this project from start to finish and we couldn’t have done this without them. I am humbled and grateful for the amount of time, effort, and dedication to this important project. Please join me in thanking them as well as all our other volunteers.

Upcoming School Events!

Mar. 5 – Jog-a-Thon Business Sponsorships Due

Early tallies suggest we are poised to outdo last year’s business sponsorships, and there is still time to submit sponsorships. They are due no later than 4:00 P.M. TODAY! If you have them, please turn them in.,

Mar. 10 (SA) – Robert Royal Luncheon with Faculty & Parents – 12:00 – 1:00 P.M.

We are very pleased to have Dr. Robert Royal, president of the Faith and Reason Institute, and regular commentator on EWTN’s popular news program “The World Over with Raymond Arroyo” who will be the keynote speaker at our annual development dinner. The purpose of our development dinner is to grow our network of potential donors to introduce Kolbe Academy & Trinity Prep to people outside our community.

Since this dinner is an invitation-only affair, some parents have expressed feeling out of the loop and disconnected with this event. I am happy to announce that for the first time, we will be hosting acomplimentary luncheon for any interested parents and staff members who wish to meet Robert Royal and hear what he has to say about the importance of classical education in 2018.  The luncheon will take place the same day Sat., March. 10th, from 12:00 – 1:00 P.M. If you are planning to attend this event, please RSVP to Maria in the office (office@kolbetrinity.org) by Wednesday, March. 7th @ 4:00 P.M.

For more information about Robert Royal, see the attached biography.

Mar. 15 – State of the School Meeting (Mandatory Attendance for Parents) – 6:30 – 8:00 P.M.

As we are roughly two-thirds of the way through the school year, we are provided with a great opportunity to reflect on the situation of the school: where it stands and what lies ahead. This is the second of two mandatory meetings held at the school and it is VERY important for all parents to attend and sign in to receive a credit of $50 to your “mandatory meeting fee” account. Proceedings will commence on Thursday, March 15th with a social half-hour from 6:30 – 7:00 P.M. followed by the main presentation from 7:00 – 8:00 P.M. Please mark this calendars and make every effort to attend.
