Tuesday of the Fourth Week in Ordinary Time

St. Martina, Virgin & Martyr (Old Calendar)

From the Headmaster, John Bertolini

Happy Catholic Schools Week! Beginning on Sunday, we have been joining with Catholic schools across in the country in celebrating the great work of Catholic schools – imparting the Gospel message, challenging the intellect, developing well-rounded student athletes, and providing a safe and healthy environment for all children and adolescents. Please see the attached flyer for more details on activities and events for the rest of Catholic Schools Week….and thank you for making Kolbe Academy & Trinity Prep your Catholic school choice!

Week in Review (Jan. 22-27)

Last Monday, Jan. 22nd, Fr. David Jenuwine offered a Traditional Latin Votive Mass for Peace on the anniversary of Roe vs. Wade, the Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion in 1973.

On Thursday, Jan. 25th, our bishop of the Diocese of Santa Rosa, Robert Vasa, visited the school with Superintendent of Catholic Schools for the diocese, Dr. Linda Norman. Along with a crowd of parents, Bishop Vasa joined the students in in morning prayer commemorating the Conversion of St. Paul. Following prayer, our entire school took turns presenting songs, a skit, a poem, a debate, biology projects, and art projects. We were very honored by his presence and were grateful for his visit.

The same evening, our chaplain, Fr. Gary Sumpter gave the fifth lecture in a ten-part series on the Fathers of the Church. Although turnout was light given other competing Catholic-related events in the area, those who showed up were treated to a truly enlightening presentation on St. Cyprian of Carthage.

On Friday, Jan. 26th our 7-12 young ladies were graced once again by the presence of Sister Mary Rose of the Marian Sisters of Santa Rosa. Sister continued her monthly sessions on Marian virtues and provided the opportunity for one-on-one counseling. We are very grateful for her time and talents.

On Saturday, Jan. 27th, many of our students and families attended the West Coast Walk for Life in San Francisco. It was gratifying to see such a great turnout from our school for this truly noble endeavor. Thank you.

Upcoming School Events!

Feb. 2 – Procession and Sung Mass for the Feast of the Presentation w/ Blessing of Throats– 7:55 – 9:00 A.M.

Join us this coming Friday, Feb. 2nd, for special Mass for the Feast of the Presentation, the official end of the extended Christmas season following Epiphany. Mass will begin with the lighting and blessing of candles outside the front office followed by a procession into the chapel and a sung Mass. The liturgy will begin at the usual time of 7:55 A.M. Following Mass will be the blessing of throats for the Feast of St. Blaise which will take place on Saturday this year. Please join us!

Feb 3 (SA) – Open House for Prospective Parents and Students – 10:00 A.M. – 12:00 P.M.

What is one of the best ways you can help your school? Bring more people to it! We are having our annual open house this coming Saturday, Feb. 3rd, from 10:00 A.M. – 12:00 P.M. This is a great way to introduce people to the school so that we can grow and thrive for years to come. Spread the word!

Feb. 4 (SU) – “Unofficial” Super Bowl Party – 3:00 P.M. in the Fellowship Hall – FREE ADMISSION!

If you’re looking for a giant screen to watch this coming Sunday’s Super Bowl between the Patriots and Eagles, look no further! Although there is no official Super Bowl party this year, you can still show up at 3:00 P.M. and watch the big game, purchase hot dogs, beer, wine, and non-alcoholic drinks, and Super Bowl squares! Will the seemingly ageless Tom Brady lead his New England Patriots to a record-tying sixth Super Bowl victory or will the underdog Philadelphia Eagles quarterbacked by back-up Nick Foles spoil the party and win their first ever Super Bowl? Come and watch! NO CHARGE FOR ADMISSION! See the attached flyer for more details.

Feb. 7 – Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom (Byzantine Catholic Mass) – 7:55 – 9:30 A.M.

Kolbe Academy graduate (Class of 1986) and Byzantine Rite priest, Fr. Christopher Crotty, will be celebrating the ancient Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom next Wednesday, Feb. 7th at the usual time of 7:55. If you have never experienced this beautiful Catholic liturgy which is almost entirely sung, please make time to attend.

News and Updates

Long-Term Substitute for Maureen Rowles’ 3/4 Grade Class

Maureen Rowles is due to go out on maternity leave after Feb. 16th, and I am pleased to announce that Susanne Heun will be filling in as a substitute from Feb. 20th through April 20th for the 3/4 gradeclass. Before enrolling at Kolbe-Trinity, Susanne spent ten years home-schooling her children using Kolbe Academy, Seton and Catholic Heritage Curriculum homeschool programs from grades pre-k through 10. More recently, she has worked as a business administrator and consulting project manager at Caldwell Vineyards. Please join me in welcoming Susanne to our team for the next couple of months.

We Need Your Wine Donations!

Thank you to those who have already generously donated. We need only 35 more bottles of wine for our instant wine cellar raffle (value of $20 and up) for our upcoming Casino Night Fundraiser on Saturday, April 21st. Please be generous as this is our biggest and most important fundraiser of the year and we need it to be a success. And to provide an extra incentive, you will receive a raffle ticket for every bottle donated for a $100 gift card towards a stay or spa treatment at the resort at the Indian Springs Resort and Spa in Calistoga. The more you donate, the better chance you have to win!

Prayer Requests

Thank you for your prayers for John Carr. He is recovering from a blood clot in his lungs, is steadily improving, and will be coming home from the hospital tonight. Please continue to keep John and the entire Carr family in your prayers.

Thank you for also for your continuing prayers for Steve Perry. He has now been home from the hospital for over a week and would love to receive visitors during his recovery. Please call first – (707)-649-0475.

Please continue to keep Chuck Rowles and his entire extended family in your prayers so that he will be ultimately cured of his stage-4 colon cancer, and that he can return to enjoying a full and active life with his family and friends. Chuck’s son, Chris, posts updates on the websites listed below. Please continue to pray the St. Peregrine Novena found below as well.
