Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday)/Shrove Tuesday
From the Desk of the Headmaster
We had a great turnout for our volunteer appreciation dinner last Thursday night, prepared by chef Cathie Schmitgal with assistance from the faculty. This shouldn’t be a surprise, because almost all the parents at this great school spend many hours volunteering for various and sundry projects. If you weren’t able to make it Thursday night for me to thank you in person, please know that your efforts are not only appreciated, but essential for the continuation of our mission to educate mind, body, and soul for the greater glory of God. May God continue to richly bless your hard work!
Our chaplain, Fr. Gary Sumpter, is now back at the rectory at St. Thomas Aquinas Parish and continues to recuperate. While there is no current timetable for his return to the school in either his chaplain or academic duties, he continues to make significant progress every day and we hope and pray to have him back with us sooner rather than later. Thank you all for your prayers in support for Fr. Gary over the last month.
Tuesday, Feb. 28th – 250/200 Fundraiser Kickoff & Mardi Gras Social – 7:00 – 8:30 P.M. – TONIGHT!
Please join us tonight for appetizers, beer, and wine as we solicit your valuable input, insight, and ideas for a successful 250/200 fundraiser. We will be gathering in the fellowship hall beginning at 7:00 P.M. The 250/200 is our biggest fundraiser this year and we need all hands on deck to blow this one out of the water! As an added incentive, you can earn up to an hour and a half of service hours and after all, who isn’t looking for an excuse to indulge a little bit before Lent begins……
Saturday, March 4th -Lenten Retreat “Listening to God’s Voice” at St. Apollinaris Parish……from Deacon Peter Matthews
Join Fr. Chi Ngo S.J., Spiritual and Retreat Director from the Jesuit Retreat House in Los Altos for a day of guided prayer and contemplation on Saturday, March 4th from 9:30 A.M. – 3:00 P.M. at St. Apollinaris Parish. See the link below for more information:
Monday, March 6 – Thursday, March 9 – Second Trimester Exams
It’s that time of the year again. Exams will take place beginning on Monday, March 6th and ending Thursday, March 9th. Monday will be a full day of school, while Tuesday-Thursday will be half-days with 11:40 dismissal. Exams are a key element of classical education as it prompts the student to synthesize the key aspects learned during the trimester. Be sure that your children and adolescents get plenty of good food and rest to ensure optimum performance. If a student has been consistently diligent in regards to regular classroom attendance, homework, classwork, quizzes, and tests, a good barometer for studying for exams is 1-2 hours for each exam. If said consistent diligence has not been done, longer periods of study time will be needed.
Tuesday, March 7 - Fr. Thomas Loya Talk
Fr. Thomas J. Loya, STB, MA will be giving an informative and engaging talk: “Fighting Fire with Fire: Confronting the Pervasive Culture of Lust & Pornography” on Tuesday evening, March 7th, at 7:00 P.M. in the fellowship hall at the school. Fr. Loya is currently the pastor of Annunciation Byzantine Catholic parish in Homer Glen, IL and holds degrees in Fine Art, Theology and Counseling. He also hosts a radio program called “Light of the East Radio” which can be heard on EWTN Radio affiliates across the country and is also a conference speaker for the Tabor Life Institute. There is no charge for the talk, but donations will be gratefully accepted.
March 10 – Second Trimester Break – NO SCHOOL
To give the students a break after almost a week of exams and to allow our teachers time to get all their exams graded, there will be no school on Friday, March 10th. Classes will resume as usual on Monday, March 13th.
March 11 – Spaghetti Dinner and Game Night – Fun for the Whole Family!
Please join us as the parents’ guild presents a spaghetti dinner followed by board and card games on Saturday night, March 11th from 5:30 – 8:00 P.M. Emily Arend will be tapping into her Italian roots so her already awesome cooking will be transcendent. But I’ve never been one for hyberbole…….:) Pricing TBD.
News and Updates!
Prayers Urgently Needed for Chuck Rowles
Please keep Chuck Rowles and his entire extended family in your prayers. Chuck was recently diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer. As we begin Lent tomorrow, I would like to ask you to re-double your efforts to prayer, sacrifice, and almsgiving for his intentions. Please see the message below from Chuck’s eldest son, Chris.
Please pray for us; masses, novenas and prayers of support are what we really need now as we are still discovering what treatment options are available to him at this time.
Donations are also welcome. We are hoping to have a consultation with MD ANDERSON CANCER CLINIC in Houston TX, and all proceeds will help to supplement Mary and Chuck’s trip to Houston. Thank you everyone for your support and let’s pray that God intercedes for us.
(Donations should go through WonderWe, donations through Caring Bridge do not help Chuck)

Good News from Catherine Audrey-Quinn
Catherine Audrey-Quinn wishes to extend a big THANK YOU to everyone for all the prayers that have been offered up on her behalf! She received the good news yesterday that she was accepted for the pilgrimage to Lourdes sponsored by the Knights of Malta! She is honored, thrilled, and am so grateful to everyone for the love and support you have provided to her and her family.
Meals for the Joe & Katie Duncan Family
Joe, Katie, Jess, and Allie Duncan welcomed baby Isabelle into their family and we would love to show them support in this beautiful (and hectic!) time of transition by providing dinners for their family. Joe has recently done countless hours of volunteer work for this great school coaching 7-8 girls and 5-6 boys basketball, and substituting for P.E. If you can be so kind as cook and deliver them a meal, they would be thrilled! It’s the least we can do for them. Lenten Mission Jar
Due to Fr. Gary’s extended absence, our high school student government has decided to take on the task of collecting money for the missions this Lent. Beginning tomorrow, Ash Wednesday, mission jars will be placed in every homeroom and students will be encouraged to bring their spare change (or more) from home to help us raise money to provide food, clothing, medicine, and shelter for those less fortunate, particularly in third-world countries. The money will be collected on April 13th (Holy Thursday).

Fingerprinting for Volunteers
Anybody who wishes to volunteer to earn requisite service hours and assist in whatever capacity next year (athletic coaching, field trips, driving for sporting events, lunch duty, etc.) MUST have been fingerprinted and needed to have this information submitted to the diocese ASAP. Please contact Emily in the office immediately to begin the process if you have not done so.
