Aug 19 – First Day of School

June 29, 2020

Solemnity of Sts. Peter and Paul, Apostles & Martyrs

Last week was incredibly busy with teachers, parents, and students spending every day from Monday-Saturday cleaning out storage sheds, filling up a huge dumpster, and making significant progress on re-organizing and re-configuring classrooms for our planned re-opening for 138 students on August 19th. A big thank you to William & Odemaris Flores-Aparacio, Sue Arend, Cindy and Andrew Mudge, Maria, Guadalupe, Cristina, and Ashley Angulo, Elena and Lilanny Reyes-Mendoza, Melissa Buyarski, Cristina, Veronica, and Carlos Uribe, and John and Katie Ferrigan for all of their help last week!  Our teachers will be taking a well-deserved month off beginning July 1st, but the work in July will necessarily continue as there is still much to be done to prepare our campus.

This will be the last Monday Memo you will receive from me until July 20th as I will be out of the office from July 2nd – July 16th. Parents will continue to receive e-mail updates from the office which will remain open with either Phil Duncan or Maria Cuevas available.

Agape Program Update!

The Agape Program continues to serve our community.  Agape is helping with grocery needs for 125-150 Napa families every Wednesday between 5-7.  To give you an idea of the need the line for the open pantry started forming just after noon last Wednesday.  If you can imagine people are showing up at noon for something that opens at 5.  Agape also continues to help with families afflicted with COVID-19.

If you need assistance, please do not hesitate to call the school or the numbers given of the Agape Team.  If you can help much help is needed.  Agape could use help with donations, checks made out to the school with Agape in the memo line, food or grocery donations dropped off at the school or physical help on Tuesday and Wednesday of each week.

Please pray to the Holy Spirit for continued guidance and for the Agape Team to be able to continue with this mission as long as it is needed.

Starting this Wednesday, July 1st, Agape’s Open Food Pantry will start going to every other week.  The Agape Food Pantry will help our school families and neighbors in July on July 1st, July 15th, and July 29th.  The move to every other week is not because the need is less, it is more, it is to help with volunteer fatigue and to be able to better stretch the donated dollars.

Unfortunately, Napa County’s unemployment rate remains the highest in the Bay Area so the need remains great.

Thank you to Isabella and Sierra Spain who joined our usual crew last week and a big shout out to our alumni for their ongoing support. We are truly grateful for your continued dedication.

Prayer Requests

Please continue to pray for one of our former teachers, Mr. Matt Badley, as the school where he was teaching in Virginia has announced its closure. Please keep him and his large family in your prayers.  Please continue to keep Jay Hipolito’s grandfather, Henry Ramirez, in your prayers as well as Margaret Crotty who is currently afflicted with cancer.

Thank you for your continued prayers for former Kolbe Academy student (and my classmate) Michael Arribage who is currently battling stage-4 kidney cancer. His treatment is moving in a very positive direction.  Please continue your prayers for Joy Gittings, grandmother of Kara Gittings, who is recovering from cancer treatment and for Bethany Pham, an 8-year girl battling cancer who is a student at St. Apollinaris Catholic School. Please continue to make time every evening to pray the Rosary for Our Lady’s intercession against the COVID-19 pandemic, and for John Carr who is attempting a full recovery from cancer.

Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam,

John Bertolini
