St. Christopher Magallanes and Companions, Martyrs

From the Headmaster, John Bertolini

100 of 116 students participated in our 2019 Jog-a-Thon (over 90 percent!) and solicited donations totaling just over $29,500! This was our most successful Jog-a-Thon ever and although we didn’t reach the very ambitious goal of $35,000 this year, I am confident that if we have the same zeal from those who helped out this year, combined with greater participation of existing students, we can reach that goal! Thank you again to chairwoman Mary Quinn, St. Helena co-chair Andrea Garcia, and all of you who made this happen.

Third trimester exams begin next Tuesday, May 28th. Since high school students will be having two exams on that Tuesday after a three-day weekend, it would be a good idea to encourage your child(ren) to spend either Saturday, May 25th or Memorial Day, Monday May 27th, preparing for the Tuesday exams. Let’s finish strong so we can start summer with no regrets!

In terms of staff personnel for the 2019-2020 academic year, all of our teachers are currently scheduled to return next year with the exception of two: Amy Thoits will not be returning to teach Algebra 2, Pre-Calculus, and Calculus and Jim Klaczak will not be returning as athletic director. Both of these staff members have been essential to continuing our mission over the last 2-3 years.

It is not easy to find a qualified upper-level math teacher who will teach in small private school such as ours and I am immensely grateful for the time and effort that Amy Thoits spent teaching these subjects to our high school students. It was a pleasure seeing her grow and mature in confidence as a math teacher.  She also volunteered to teach a music seminar in the current semester to the 11/12 students. Thanks again, Amy!

Jim Klaczak will be wrapping a three-year tenure as athletic director. He stepped into his position right about the same time I became the full-time headmaster and both of us had to learn very quickly on the job. He was instrumental in establishing and coaching Trinity Prep’s first six-man flag football team, started a track and field program from grades K-12, and has hired some amazingly talented coaches. On top of that, Jim was always willing and able to lend a helping hand in covering lunch duty, substitute teaching, driving the high school boys to multiple basketball games last season, and volunteered to teach two high school electives in his time here at the school. I will miss having him in the Kolbe-Trinity community and it will not be easy to replace him and his unique talents. May God bless him in his future endeavors.

Congratulations to our own Maria Cuevas and her husband, Ricardo, who both received the Sacrament of Confirmation on Saturday and also to Trinity Prep graduates Sean Ryan and Mary Kate Bakh who were joined in the Sacrament of Matrimony the same day!

Thank you to Cindy & Andrew Mudge, Allison, Dominic, and Gianna Bertolini, and Dennis Healey for assisting us at our final workday of the year supervised by yours truly and Phil Duncan. Our garden was planted and extensive weeding took place in preparation for graduation on June 1st.
