September 5, 2017

St. Teresa of Calcutta

Hopefully you were all able to beat the heat in one shape or form over Labor Day weekend. We have a short week this week, the last four-day week until early November when the first trimester exams are administered. There are a number of important events coming up, so please read the memo carefully.

Week in Review (Aug. 28 – Sep. 1)

We had our first almost-full week last week. Thank you to Fr. David Jenuwine who offered the traditional Latin Mass for us on Monday morning, Aug. 28th, and will continue to offer it on a twice-a-month basis. On Tuesday, August 29th our high schoolers signed up for fine arts electives of either art, film, or choir and assisted Mr. Duncan and me in firming up plans for high school clubs. It was great to see a such a wonderful turnout for our unofficial school Mass at St. Thomas Aquinas on Friday, Sep. 1st, the first of a number of first Friday half-days throughout the schoolyear. Following Mass, our faculty had a training session introducing our new grading software, Gradelink, which should be up and running by Friday, Sep. 15th if all goes as planned.

Upcoming School Events!

Sep. 6 - Parents’ Guild Meeting in the X-Room

Please join us next Wednesday evening in the X-Room @ 7:00 P.M. as we hold the first parents’ guild meeting of the year. I will be in attendance, along with last year’s president, Emily Arend, to discuss ways in which we can revitalize the parents’ guild and pass the baton to a new set of officers, beginning with selecting a new president! As I explained last Friday at Back-to-School Night, the parents’ guild provides essential support to the staff and faculty of the school which includes providing refreshments for Back-to-School Night, annual school fall picnic, hot lunches throughout the year, helping to assist social and religious celebrations (Halloween – May Crowning), teacher Christmas and end-of-the-year luncheons, field trips, etc…. Without the assistance of the parents’ guild, many of these functions would be poorly run or wouldn’t run at all. If you and your children value these extra-academic functions that enrich the school, please do make an effort to get involved in parents’ guild.

Sep. 7 – Hot Lunch!

Our first hot lunch of the year will be held this Thursday, Sep. 7th. Chef Emily Arend will once again be providing us with her delicious food. This week she will be grilling hamburgers and cheeseburgers. The cost for a meal (burger, chips, drink, and dessert) will be $3 for a TK-6 grade lunch and $5 for a 7-12 grade lunch. There will be no IOU's this coming school year so your child/children must come with cash/check in hand or they will be unable to obtain a hot lunch.

Sep. 8– Feast of the Birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary

To celebrate the birth of our Blessed Mother, we will be serving cake to the students in the Fellowship Hall during lunch. Also, the Pro-Life Club will be having a bake sale at both lunch periods.

Sep. 9 (SAT) – School Yard/Rummage Sale (8:00 A.M. – 2:00 P.M.) – Alumni Mixer (4:00 – 5:30 P.M.)/ Back-to-School BBQ (5:30 – 7:30 P.M.)

It will be a busy day at Kolbe-Trinity on Sat., Sep. 9th!

  1. Clear out your homes, storage areas, closets, and garages! We’ll be hosting a yard/rummage sale at the school on Saturday morning, Sep. 9th, from 8:00 A.M. – 2:00 P.M.  We need your help running the event and since all proceeds will go to the school, all parents and students who attend to assist will receive valuable service hours.  Please see the following link for more information and to sign to assist. http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0b4ca4af29a2f85-schoolwide Please sign up by the end of the week so that we can properly prepare.

The rummage sale has been postponed until Saturday, Nov. 4th.

  1. We will be holding our first annual alumni mixer from 4:00 – 5:30 P.M. All alumni are invited and encouraged to attend to check out the new and improved campus, catch up with old friends, enjoy some snacks, and imbibe some refreshing drinks, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic.
  2. From 5:30 – 7:30 P.M., we will hold our annual Back-to-School fall picnic. Hot dogs, hamburgers, and drinks (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic) will be provided. Families with last names beginning with A-H are kindly requested to bring a salad or side dish and families with last names beginning with I-Z are kindly requested to bring dessert. Looking forward to seeing you all there!

Sep. 13 – Picture Day

Shooting Stars Productions will be visiting our school on Wednesday, Sep. 13th to snap school, class, and individual pictures on our yearly picture day. Students are asked to come to school in full uniform (including sweater) This will begin immediately after Mass and will occupy a fair amount of the morning. We need volunteer parents to assist our teachers in rounding up students and expediting the process of picture-taking so that it can run as smoothly as possible. Please contact Emily in the office if you can help. Additional information can be found in the Back-to-School folder you should’ve all received at Back-to-School Night.

Sep. 16 (SA) – Classical Learning Test @ Kolbe-Trinity – 9:00 A.M. – 11:30 A.M.

I am pleased to announce that Kolbe Academy & Trinity Prep will be hosting the Classic Learning Test (CLT) on September 16. As a classical alternative to the SAT and the ACT, the CLT is much more reflective of the curriculum we offer our students. Students also receive same-day test results as the test is taken online (on a laptop or tablet). The test costs $49, but there are no additional fees to send scores to colleges. To register by the September 12 deadline, please visit https://www.cltexam.com/register.

Upcoming Community Events!

Date Night Returns to St. Apollinaris!

After taking a break in August, Date Night returns on September 15th to St. Apollinaris Parish.  The first program of the new season will feature John Hamlon, former Associate Director of the St. Ignatius Institute at the University of San Francisco and an author/teacher on the writings and thought of Pope St. John Paul II.  John will give a presentation on Familiaris Consortio, JP II's epic document on the role of the Christian Family in the modern world.  This will be a kick off for the program this year which will study the document and probe its wisdom for living out our marriage and family vocations in these turbulent times.  This is relevant for couples of all stages of married and family life and no one unpacks it better than John.

Wine, cheese, etc. at 7:00 pm on September 15th will be followed by John's talk at 7:30. The gathering will be in the Youth Room and child care will be available. Please RSVP to Walt and Pam Birdsall (waltandpambirdsall@sbcglobal.net) and let them know if you can make it. They guarantee that you will not want to miss this!

News and Updates

Drop-Off and Pick-Up Procedure

Our neighbor, Melissa, who lives in the blue house right before the front gate has kindly requested that we keep her driveway clear during morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up. I will be placing cones temporarily to keep her driveway clear until it is no longer necessary.

New Administrative Assistant Hired!

It is my pleasure to announce our new administrative assistant: Mrs. Maria Cuevas. Maria is a parishioner at St. Apollinaris parish here in Napa and has worked for the last twelve years at Calistoga Ranch (An Auberge Resort), most recently as activities director and speaks Spanish fluently. Please join me in welcoming Maria to our community!

Lunch Duty Volunteers Needed!

Thank you again to Wendy Huss for signing up once again for lunch duty to assist our teachers. Although our 1-6 grade teachers will get a assistance for their lunch twice a week, we need many more volunteers for all lunches, particularly for Jennifer Warner’s TK-K lunch, and 7-12 grade lunches. Lunch duty volunteers provide an essential service of relieving our teachers so that they can have some down time, grab their lunch, and do a better job of instructing your children and adolescents. Please see Emily in the office to sign up. It’s an easy way to earn service hours.

Room Available to Rent

Carole Duncan’s friend, Tricia Schuh, is looking for a Christian woman as a roommate to rent a master bedroom with a private bath, her own living room, full kitchen use, including parking in driveway.  Sorry no pets: she has one cat.  $900 and shared utilities.  Please call Tricia at 707-227-5394.  Her email is:  schuht03@hotmail.com

Prayer Requests

Please pray for the repose of the soul of our former neighbor, Joe Phipps, in the front house facing Redwood Rd. He and his family had moved to Arizona to seek treatment for his very aggressive form of stomach cancer. Joe was the owner of Pure Set Construction. Mass will be offered for him this coming Wednesday, Sep. 6th (tomorrow).

Continue to remember Fr. James Lantsberger  who served as chaplain at the Napa State Hospital for over four decades,  offered Mass at both Kolbe Academy and Kolbe-Trinity when needed beginning in the 1980’s, and more recently offered the Traditional Latin Mass at Holy Family Mission in Rutherford on Sundays up until this past April, is suffering side effects from chemotherapy to treat cancer which have caused him tremendous weakness and have led his being placed in a nursing and rehabilitation center in Oakland. Fr. Lantsberger is now living in Belleville, Illinois and being taken care of by his brother priests of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate.

Please continue to keep Chuck Rowles and his entire extended family in your prayers so that he will be ultimately cured of his stage-4 colon cancer, and that he can return to enjoying a full and active life with his family and friends. Chuck’s son, Chris, has recently posted updates on the websites listed below. Please continue to pray the St. Peregrine Novena found below as well.
