Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Dear Parents,
Facilities Update
We finished the irrigation for the playing field this Saturday. My thanks to the dedicated few who showed up and pounded out this work. Unfortunately, because it was so few, we will most likely not be ready to install sod this coming Saturday. We still have trenches to backfill, then some tractor work, then raking. If anybody can commit to stepping up on Thursday and/or Friday to do the raking, we might still be able to make it happen.
Also, as I mentioned last week, we're still short on the money to do the sod. If you are moved to make a donation toward sod, please let me know ASAP if you can help, as I need to place the order soon. If we can narrow the gap, we might be able to pay to have it installed, saving many volunteers a day of back-breaking labor.
Harvest Fest
[Dramatic movie trailer guy's voice] "Imagine a school where meeting the basic needs is a regular struggle, yet hope persists of better things. A school where the cost is low compared to comparable schools, yet the school receives no outside financing-not from a church, not from the state, not from the federal government. Where students are taught to know, love and serve God, flying in the face of increasingly secular society. You've just imagined Kolbe Academy & Trinity Prep!"
No big deal or anything, but Harvest Fest is 11 days away!!! Not to emphasize this too much, but Harvest Fest is The Most Important Fundraiser We Do. I know that we all have busy lives and live in a trying economy, but we really need to support our school. Talk to your friends who have kids in other schools, even public schools, about the pressures to contribute financially. How much more do we need you to participate? Harvest Fest accounts for 20% of our revenue, more or less. Tuition accounts for only about 55-60% of our expenses.
Harvest Fest will only be successful if you participate. What can you do?
Buy tickets: Tickets for Harvest Fest are available for sale after school every day. Remember that families may buy two tickets each at $75-the same as in the recent past. This is less than a night in a crummy motel in Napa. Besides, for that $150 you will receive fine wine, a sit-down dinner, scrumptious desserts created by our own Mary Rowles and Deana Muth, and dancing to live music.
Sell tickets: Encourage friends and family to come. I know $100 is a lot of money to many of us. Other people drop that on dinner once per week. Tickets for similar events for other schools go for $200. Remember-it's a fundraiser to help a school that [dramatic movie trailer guy again] "receives no outside financing-not from a church, not from the state, not from the federal government." Also, if you have a group, tables are available-$700 for a table for 8 or $900 for a table for 10.
Buy Wine Cellar raffle tickets: For $20 per entry, ticket holders will have a chance at winning around 60 bottles of wine. Tickets should be available for sale after school this week, too.
Remember, there will be no school on Monday, September 21, as a Harvest Fest Recovery Day.
New Pet Policy
Due to a couple of recent near-incidents and a general liability concern, I am implementing a policy of no pets outside of vehicles on campus without approval. My general inclination was to be fairly tolerant on this, and I have been, but these recent events have given me cause for concern. If a pet is coming for show-and-tell or some other purpose, please just seek approval in advance. Thank you for your help with this and I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
Yours in Christ,
Brian Muth

Weekly Words from Miss Jaminet
September 8, 2009
The school year has gotten off to a wonderful beginning! Thank you for your efforts to get your family geared up for the school year. I am thoroughly enjoying my position as your assistant principal. I thank you for your patience and understanding as I experience the "firsts" of a first school year with you.
Many people have noticed the improved quality of the campus and commented on the continued forward energy that began last year with the merger. This year, let's take every opportunity to invite guests to visit and see what we're about. We have a perfect chance tomorrow morning. If you haven't already, please invite grandparents to the 7:52 am Mass offered in their honor. After Mass, parents and grandparents are invited to stay for refreshments and a reception with presentations by the 1st/2nd and 3rd/4th classrooms. In addition, Fr. Chad will be staying to offer Confessions for visitors, staff, and students.
Thank you for your efforts to make morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up run smoothly. Please note that adult supervision on campus does not begin until 7:30 AM, at which time the teachers are on duty in their classrooms. If you arrive before this, please stay with your student(s) and do not leave until you hear the 7:30 AM bell. If you notice that some students are on campus, they are the students that arrive with teachers and are under their direct supervision. During afternoon pick-up, teacher supervisors remain at the pick-up point from release at 2:50 until 3:10 PM. Students who are not picked up by 3:10 will wait for pick-up in the school office.
Peace & Joy,
Miss Jaminet

Boys' Soccer and Girls' Volleyball Update
The
Trinity Prep girls' volleyball team put forth a competitive effort
in a defeat at Calistoga this past Thursday. Setter Anna Arend
assisted on several nice kills; Mary Birdsall scored a number of
service points in the last game and was a key as a defensive
specialist; and Barbara Bakh played well overall, serving and
recording key digs out of the back row. Rachel Nelson, Claire Maxson
and Shannon Pace also played well for the Crusaders.
The
volleyball team will look for its first victory this week, as it
travels to Sonoma Academy in Santa Rosa on Tuesday (5:00 p.m.)
before heading to Vacaville to face Buckingham Charter for a 6:30
p.m. match at Vaca Pena Middle School on Thursday, September 10. The
home opener at Crosswalk Community Church has been moved to Monday,
September 14 at 5:00 p.m.
Meanwhile, the boys' soccer team caught a bit of bad luck this week
as its lone scheduled game at Napa Christian was canceled due to
Napa Christian not having enough players at this point to field a
team. We still are hoping to play our regularly scheduled September
15 match at Napa Christian next Tuesday, September 15 at 4:00 p.m.
The boys' team will not be practicing this Thursday or Friday so
that the boys can attend the scheduled retreat.
7-8 Grade Girls' Basketball Meeting
We
are holding a meeting for any interested 7-8 grade girls' basketball
players and their parents Monday, September 21 in the Fellowship
Hall on campus at 7:00 p.m. We are hoping to gauge interest in
forming a 7-8 grade girls' team for this year. Trinity Prep Varsity
Girls' Basketball Coach John Streett will be in attendance.
Calling all interested 3-8 Grade Boys' Basketball Players!
Trinity Prep Varsity Varsity Boys' Basketball Coach Jesse West is
hosting a meeting for all interested boys basketball players between
grades 3-8 on Monday, October 5 in the Fellowship Hall on campus at
7:00 p.m. Parents and students are invited. This meeting does not
have to be limited to Kolbe Academy & Trinity Prep students and
families. Interested 3-8 grade boys and their parents from outside
our school community are also encouraged to attend.
Looking for Drivers for Road Games
As
is tradition (an unfortunate, but necessary tradition), we will need
parents to drive to away games once again. With the departure of the
Cravalho family to Colorado, we will be missing one of the all-time
great and reliable transporters of our student-athletes. Our hope is
that we will not have to lean on the same high school parents over
and over for this service.
If
all parents of high school student-athletes would drive to at least
one game for the season of sport that their student participates,
this would be a huge help to those who drive nearly all the time.
Look
through the game schedule for girls' volleyball or boys' soccer
(click here) and if there are any games you would be willing and
able to drive to, let Athletic Director Bob Greene know by calling
the office at (707) 258-9030.
All
volunteer drivers must meet three requirements:
First, fill out the volunteer drivers form. It can be printed out
off the 'Sports" page of the school website. Here is a link for your
convenience
Volunteer Driver Form
Second,
provide a copy of proof of insurance that states you have liability
coverage of at least $100,000 per person and $300,000 per
occurrence.
And
third, a copy of your driver's license. All of this will be put on
file in the main office.
Cars
that can transport many people are always nice, but every driver
helps regardless of car size. For example, with Head Volleyball
Coach Nancy Nelson able to take seven people to each game, we would
not need someone with a big vehicle to take the remaining girls that
would need to make a particular trip. I understand why this is not
something that everyone loves to do, but parental support is
necessary for this and many other aspects of the sports program to
work. Again, please look at the girls' volleyball and boys' soccer.
Emergency Cards:
We are now into our third week of school and we have many families that have not turned in their emergency cards. It is very important that we have the most updated information on file in case of an emergency. Our parent and teacher chaperones also carry these cards with them on field trips, so families that have a student attending the boys retreat on Thursday & Friday, Sept 10 & 11 or a 7/8 grader attending the S.F. symphony trip on Friday Sept. 11, need to get their emergency cards in today. You can access the form with this link (Emergency Card) or I have extra copies in the office.
Sweetwater Retreats:
Boys' Retreat
The high school boys will be leaving for their retreat on Thursday September 10th and we are still in need of one more chaperone and driver for the retreat. If you are available please call Toni Williams at 258-9030.
Girls' Retreat
The high school girls will be leaving for their retreat on Thursday Sept. 24 and will return on Friday Sept. 25. We have a cook for the retreat, but we still need at least three chaperones and drivers. Please check your schedules to see if you are available. We have several students that have not turned in their permission slips for this trip. You can access the form with this link (Girls Sweetwater)
